It really depends whether the installer or, to be precise, the installer's kernel can see your externl USB hdd. Is it the same as with the T42p? Did you use the same kernel? (linux or linux26 on the Debian installation prompt?)

Here, the kernel 2.4 that comes with the installer doesn't see my USB devices (or rather, the usb-storage module doesn't recognize it), while the kernel 2.6 does. Try to go to console number 2 by pressing Alt+F2 and then issue dmesg to see the kernel messages and 'cat /proc/partitions' to see which devices/partitions your kernel sees.
