The T43p (model no. 2668G2G) uses the following hardware:
Component | Status | Comments |
---|---|---|
Intel Pentium M 770 with 2.1GHz (Sonoma Chipset, 533MHz Frontside Bus) | works | including frequency scaling and powersaving |
1024MB DDR2 SDRAM | works | |
Hitachi Travelstar 7K60 60GB harddisk (7200RPM, 8MB Cache) | works | speed is very good. Powersaving and suspend-to-RAM issues can be fixed by applying a couple of patches, see the Harddisk page for details. |
IBM Active Protection System | works | using the hdaps kernel module as found in kernel 2.6.14 and the corresponding hdaps tools (Debian package hdaps-utils) it's possible to watch the tilting and shaking of the notebook in 3D. Neat, but not useful as of now, since there's no possibility to park the head automatically in case of dropping the Thinkpad or similar. |
CD-RW/DVD-RW Multi-Burner | works | after enabling the SATA-ATAPI stuff in includes/linux/libata.h, see the Multi-Burner configuration page |
128MB ATI FireGL V3200 graphics | works | powersaving is not working yet, the opensource driver works very good apart from 3D performance, using ATI's binary-only driver for 3D and TV-Out |
14.1" SXGA+ LCD display (1400x1050px) | works | |
Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Mini-PCI Adapter | works | using the driver from http://ipw2200.sf.net |
Broadcom BCM5751M Gigabit-LAN | works | using the tg3 kernel module; beware: it's not included in the standard Debian kernels |
Bluetooth | works | using the hci_usb kernel module |
Infrared | works | using the nsc_ircc kernel module, a patch is needed for correct hardware detection, see the Infrared page for details |
56k Modem | works | using the Conexant HSF softmodem driver from http://www.linuxant.com/ |
2x USB2 | works | using the uhci_hcd and ehci_hcd kernel modules |
PCMCIA Cardbus Slot | works | using the yenta_socket kernel module |
Parallel Port | unknown | not tried yet |
Fingerprint Reader | works | using the bioapi software found at http://www.qrivy.net/~michael/blua/, see the Fingerprint Reader page for details |
Here's the lspci output: (with updated PCI-IDs from pciids.sourceforge.net, you can update them with the update-pciids command in Debian)

Fingerprint Reader & Security system
Hello,
Do anybody know if there is a way to make the fingerprint reader and the security system work correctly on linux?
Thanks

I've seen messages stating it was possible to use it already, but I haven't tried it myself. The relevant mails can be found in the mailing list archives.

Fingerprint reader
Thanks a lot,
but I heard that IBM would release a official and closed source driver around octobre, are theyonly a little bit late or did they change their mind ?

no idea
that's the first time I hear of IBM themselves releasing any driver for the fingerprint reader, maybe you confuse them with UPEK? (see http://linuxbiometrics.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=16)

geloest?
nachdem du im ThinkWiki schreibst das der Patch jetzt funktioniert, hat sich das Problem damit schon geloest?
Und wie Thinker dort schon geschrieben hat, du musst experimental=1 als Modul-Parameter verwenden.

Right
You're probably right, I heard it on a forum and it seems to be the same information... We just have to hope that the project will go on

Wifi
I'm having problems with wifi ... I installed it with the debian sources (ipw2200-source and ieee80211-source) plus the module-assistant. I've got the right firmware (v. 2.4), the assistant find it, and drivers are loaded at startup :
ieee80211_crypt: registered algorithm 'NULL'
ieee80211: 802.11 data/management/control stack, 1.1.6
ieee80211: Copyright (C) 2004-2005 Intel Corporation
ieee80211_crypt: registered algorithm 'WEP'
ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, 1.0.8
ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2005 Intel Corporation
Nevertheless udev doesn't add it to /etc/network/interfaces.
Is there anything else to do?

Ok
Ok everything is clear now. The problem is that in T43p there can be 3 different kind of wifi chipset .. And I don't have the same one. The problem can be solved installing madwifi drivers.

What about sound?
Hi,
I'm still trying to get sound out of my IBM T43. All the modules seem to be loaded, all the devices seem to be there, applications (e.g., alsamixer and alsaplayer) don't report any errors, but still there is no sound to be heard. I read somewhere IBM keys to mute and change sound volume work independently, but pressing them don't help either, even in presense of tpb that does show that sound level is changing when I press the buttons.
I've tried 2.6.13 (built myself) and 2.6.14 (from Debian unstable) kernels to no avail. I've tried one other distro as well, -- still no sound. Yes, it works in Windoze, so that's not a hardware problem either.
Any ideas?

Please ignore the above,
-- it has been a ThinkWiki FAQ
Don't know how I missed it using Google searches before. Really sorry for bothering you about it.

same here - no sound
And I have over 10 years experience in linux development, and maintain a small distribution. And I can't get even a simple .wav to sound from the speakers using linux. They seriously screwed something up!!! 2.6.15 - 2.6.16 - no sound!

sound was never a problem
using the i810_audio (OSS) or snd_intel8x0 (ALSA) modules. Did you check mixer settings etc.?

same USB hdd?
It really depends whether the installer or, to be precise, the installer's kernel can see your externl USB hdd. Is it the same as with the T42p? Did you use the same kernel? (linux or linux26 on the Debian installation prompt?)
Here, the kernel 2.4 that comes with the installer doesn't see my USB devices (or rather, the usb-storage module doesn't recognize it), while the kernel 2.6 does. Try to go to console number 2 by pressing Alt+F2 and then issue dmesg to see the kernel messages and 'cat /proc/partitions' to see which devices/partitions your kernel sees.
